the dancing queen

Friday night and the lights are low
Looking out for the place to go
Where they play the right music, getting in the swing
You come in to look for a king
Anybody could be that guy
Night is young and the music’s high
With a bit of rock music, everything is fine
You’re in the mood for a dance
And when you get the chance...

tea time

Tea, tiny cakes, cucumber and radish sandwiches, floral dresses, all are images of a southern tradition.  I am glad their are girls like Jessica Cassin to keep that tradition alive.

is it time for cake?

I remember getting so excited about my birthday cakes as a child.  Today, I get excited about cakes but is not for the same reason.  Then, it did not matter what the cake would taste like but only that it took the form of something other than a square or rectangle - like my favorite childhood cake: the Barbie Dress cake.  My mom took one of my Barbies, used a bunt cake and beautiful frosting skills to create an edible ballgown.  I was mesmerized.

don't stop, can't stop, won't stop the beat

She dances with abandon.  She is united.  She pauses, thinks, and begins again.

putting on a show

This past weekend saw the premier of His Royal Flyness, DJ Edward VI (aka Paul Butterworth) at Matt's 29th Birthday Party.  To debut his mad skills, Paul not only prepared an awesome set list, but an equally awesome persona - royal threading in tow. Walking the fine line between hipsterville and ostentatiousness, Paul combined the fashion sense of Michael Jackson with the unaffectedness of Julian Casablancas, and the makeup stylings of David Bowie.  He was mighty impressive.

the rock show

When I was in college, I looked forward to the annual celebration of youth and the silliness of American Culture known to us at WKU as The Rock Show.  Set near Halloween, this concert/dance party featured costumes, body paint, and eccentric behavior.  A group of man-boys would come together as a band and create a set list to inspire every type of dancer.  This involved such favorites as Bon Jovi and AC/DC.  Their outfits were usually the most intense - with the wearer embracing their character most seriously.  Usually these costumes were ultra tough (or tuff, if you will) and tried to get at the heart of Rock'n Roll personified.  As seen below, Dusty Wood was so tuff, he can't even afford to look straight at the camera.  Who said that modern America is void of Warriors?  Seems to me, they are alive and take'n names.

This is an image from the archives...it was shot with my Nikon N65 in 2005 and printed by hand in the WKU dark room.

Halloweenhead

I've got a halloweenhead
Head full of tricks and treats
It leads me thru the nighttime streets
Black cats and falling trees
Under ladders always walking
Salt shaker spills just throw it over your shoulder, babe

I look forward to my annual pumpkin carving party for months.  The thought of a huge pot of venison chili cooking on the stove, cider brewing in a crock pot, pumpkins waiting to be carved - makes me smile.  6th annual.  I cannot believe I have been doing it this long.  Maybe someday, you will get a handmade invitation in the mail to my 37th annual...
